Challenging Lenses of Myanmar Studies

14th International Burma Studies Conference

Dates Postponed
Northern Illinois University
At the Center for Burma Studies, we are delighted to announce the theme for the Biennial International Burma Studies Conference, "Burmavision2020: Challenging Lenses of Myanmar Studies." As one of the longest-running international conferences on the country, we take the metaphor of the year 20/20 to explore both the history of interdisciplinary studies of the country, as well as contemporary issues in Burma/Myanmar.

Important Announcement

As you probably anticipated regarding the situation with COVID19, the Center for Burma Studies has made the difficult decision to postpone the 2020 International Burma Studies Conference for one year.

We are following the safety protocols set in place by the leadership at Northern Illinois University, which adhere to the guidance set forth by the Illinois governor, J.B. Pritzker, and his administration.

At this time, it is unclear when a gathering of 300 scholars can take place on campus. We are working closely with all of the departments that on which we depend to organize any such large event and feel confident that this is the best decision for the safety of everyone involved. We will announce in the near future the proposed exact dates in September 2021 when we would host the conference at NIU.

This website will remain active and will be the best place to stay up-to-date. The call for papers submission form will remain active and we will continue to gather abstracts as they come in. Scholars will be given an opportunity to revise their abstracts next year if they wish to do so.

If you have any question please direct your inquiries to Dr. Catherine Raymond (Director, Center for Burma Studies) at craymond@niu.edu
