This carving in teak, lacquered and then gilded, is only a small detail of an elaborate wooden architrave molding formerly surrounding an altarpiece or possibly a door or window from a religious building. 19th century floral decorations of this type commonly incorporated inlaid glass and gems, and are typical of the Mandalay period. Here, the crouching naya dragon below is surrounded by foliage, while a single kneeling deva is paying homage above.
