Buddha in bhumisparsa mudra (gesture of calling the earth to witness) framed by an architectural motif, additional smaller Buddhas and foliage.

Terracotta

Burma/Myanmar; 11th Century

DU 1971.147; Denison University

This is a gilded votive tablet dating from the late eleventh century. Here, the Buddha is seated in the earth-touching gesture between massive pillars supporting a heavily ornate arch with superstructure. The Buddha’s throne is flanked by lions, a symbol of royalty which reflects, in this context, the Buddha’s spiritual superiority.
