Gift of Abbot Low Moffat
This footed, lacquer bowl is decorated with palace scenes. These show the king seated under a royal pavilion and surrounded by court attendants. Such scenes were popular in Burma, as they demonstrated the benefits of good karma. A person’s actions generate good or bad karma which in turn affects one’s rebirth. Good karma produces a birth in a life of luxury and ease, while bad karma has the opposite effect. The king is the layman with the best karma, exemplified by the comforts with which he was surrounded. The Moffats were in Burma during the 1950s in a diplomatic capacity.
